Operations Recommence at Scotland's Busiest Airport In the Wake of Significant ATC System Failure

An IT issue at Edinburgh's ATC meant all flights could arrive or depart from the facility.

Flight operations have restarted at Scotland's primary international airport after a substantial air traffic control outage brought the international hub to a standstill.

All incoming and outgoing flights were stopped because of an IT issue that was reported at approximately 08:30.

Some passengers were left waiting in aircraft on the tarmac during the disruption.

Flights Resume with Residual Impact

A statement indicated at 10:40 that flights had resumed, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

Nonetheless, significant disruption are likely to continue throughout the day. Services bound for London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been axed, with many others experiencing delays.

An airport representative had initially projected that a significant number of movements could be affected.

"Passengers are advised to get in touch with their carrier for the current status on their individual travel plans," was the consistent advice.

Cause of the Chaos

The problem was traced to the full ground stop to an IT issue with its ATC service provider.

Travelers continue to be advised to check the status of their trip before departing to the terminal as knock-on effects are managed.
